Portraits in Blue #01

DIANA SAR

There is something refreshing about people who refuse to be just one thing. Diana Sar is one of them.

She has built a career by following curiosity instead of convention, moving naturally between disciplines without ever feeling the need to explain why. Whether she’s on a film set, behind the DJ booth or standing on a theatre stage, each role reveals a different side of the same person. Independent. Curious. Constantly evolving.

This is a portrait of the woman behind the name.

PB: Tell us about yourself. Who is Diana Sar, beyond what people already know?

DS: I’d say that she is a girl who appreciates the small things, finds beauty in the details, and feels the need to be more present and not be in such a rush all the time. She feeds herself through connections with others and loves to hear their stories.

PB: Where are we finding you these days?

DS: In between festivals where I play, like Electric Castle or Waves Festival, and stages like the Romanian Athenaeum, where I have projects that combine classical music with theatre. And soon on the HBO platform with a new movie that will premiere at the end of this year. I’m very excited about the projects I’m working on.

PB: What drew you to acting?

DS: The power to take others into the story created by us, to make them forget about their problems, help them relax, learn something, or heal something. I love that I can study different character types and personalities in order to live another life on stage.

“Success means being able to do what you love and offer it as a gift to as many people as possible.”

PB: Your first memory of wearing denim?

DS: Omg! My first pair of short denim jeans that my father bought for me when I was 13. I still have them; they still fit, and they’re low-waisted, so they’re back in trend. :)) I remember taking such good care of them because they were my only pair of jeans at that time, and I used to wear them a lot to castings at the beginning of my modelling career. Now I have many more fits, but those bring back some nice memories for me.

PB: What does a normal day look like in your world?

DS: There are no normal days, and no two days are the same. One day I might be rehearsing with Maia Morgenstern, and two days later I could be 50m in the sky on a platform having a snack, then playing at Electric Castle Festival. The only thing that is normal in my life is going to Pilates three times a week. Other than that, it’s chaos: rehearsals, clothes everywhere on the floor, and no routine at all. But I wouldn’t change a thing.

PB: Do you have a pair of jeans you’d never give away? Why?

DS: One of the many pairs of jeans that I have from No44, because they fit so well and I’ve worn them so much that they’ve become part of my personality, a statement piece that represents me. If I remember correctly, they were actually the first jeans that I put on when we first worked together for a photoshoot.

PB: Who’s a woman (real or fictional) that shaped the way you see the world?

DS: There isn’t a single woman. It’s more of a combination, from my mother to my classical guitar professor, to my first and second track and field coaches, all the way to my acting teachers and my fitness coach at the moment. I’ve learned, and I’m constantly learning, from the women in my life whom I look up to and who have lives that inspire me. I think that, as a woman, shaping other women is very inspiring, and we should all try to lift each other, anyway we can.

PB: What does success mean to you today?

DS: For me, success means being able to do what you love and offer it as a gift to as many people as possible. From being able to play different characters in big productions to making people dance or smile.

PB: What do your jeans know about you that most people don’t?

DS: That when I truly love something, I would not replace it, no matter what. I get attached to the things that become part of my life, and my favourite pair of jeans is definitely one of them. They’ve been there for some of my best memories, know all my favourite places and routines, and probably a few secrets too.

PB: What makes a pair of jeans worth keeping?

DS: The quality, the way they fit, the design, and sometimes even the memories created while wearing them. The best pair is the one you keep reaching for, no matter how many others are in your wardrobe.
